Some of the best beaches and most scenic spots on the British Virgin Islands are only accessible by boat. On the 4800 Sail Catamaran you can leapfrog between them as you wish. Your skipper, an old hand in these waters, can advise you on the best places to visit, while your cook prepares your meals, snacks and mixes up a cocktail or two.
You can laze in the Caribbean sun on the over-water netting, or relax in the forward-facing outdoor seating area, which leads through into an air-conditioned saloon. At the stern there’s a dining area for alfresco meals, and a further lounge area.
There’s no set itinerary: every day is tailored to your interests. You can spend languid days relaxing on an uninhabited isle, or flit from island to island. With snorkelling equipment and kayaks on board you can investigate coral gardens or paddle into the sea caves at Norman Island (the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island). There’s also an armada of wrecks to explore if you prefer to dive.
There’s plenty to explore on shore, including an abundant amount of scenic anchorages. These range from the casual ambiance of Great Harbour on Tortola to the gourmet restaurants of the North Sound on Virgin Gorda. With your skipper’s local knowledge, you’ll be able to explore some of the more secluded sites from inland hiking trails to local beach barbecues.
Cabins
The three air-conditioned cabins all have their own en suite, fitted with a washbasin, toilet and shower. There’s a separate cabin for crew. Each cabin has been designed to make the most of the space, with a hull window and skylight, open shelving and storage under the bed.
Dining
- You can sit back while your cook prepares all your meals, from alfresco dinners overlooking the stern to picnics on the beach
- You’ll be contacted before departure to ensure that the vessel is stocked with your preferred choice of drinks and food
- Specific dietary requirements can be catered for as well as separate meals for children.
- The catamaran has indoor and outdoor dining areas, although you might like to step ashore and try some of the local fare
- Many of the islands are refreshingly undeveloped but you’ll find plenty of onshore fine-dining, relaxed bistros and beach bars
Routes
After boarding your vessel in Road Town’s marina on the largest island of Tortola, you’re free to explore as you wish. With no set route, your skipper will be able to suggest places that suit your interests, whether you’re looking for the best snorkelling spots or an uninhabited island to explore.
The short distance between the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke means that you can easily hop between them, perusing the range of pretty marinas, fishing villages and beach bars. There are plenty of opportunities for a secluded mooring among the scattering of tiny islands that make up the rest of the archipelago, or you could sail to Anegada, a more rural island that lies 22 km (14 miles) north.
