Built in the 14th century at the same time as the Palais des Papes (Papal Palace), La Mirande was once a hotel for cardinals. Over the centuries it has passed through many hands, but it retains its history through its heritage style, medieval tapestries and 16th-century ceilings. Today, it's privately owned and family run, exuding the feeling of a private home with excellent service. Located right in the heart of Avignon, it offers easy access to all that the area has to offer, from the Palais des Papes right next door, to the restaurants and shops lining its medieval streets.
Rooms in the main building are elegant and adorned with marble fireplaces, chandeliers, toile de jouy wallpaper and vintage parquet or terracotta flooring, while those in the newer Empire Building are spacious and contemporary, designed in a Napoleon III style.
During your stay you can relax and enjoy light fare and beverages in the covered courtyard or outdoor terrace and garden area, where you can take in views of the Palais des Papes. There's also an excellent restaurant on site offering first-rate cuisine and cooking classes.
La Mirande is a Provence institution, bursting with history yet never feeling dated. We particularly like the delightful inner courtyard and outdoor terraced gardens, as well as its impeccable service and enviable location in the heart of Avignon.

While all different from one another, the rooms in the main building at Le Mirande are all equally elegant, decorated in a classic heritage style with marble fireplaces, statues, parquet or terracotta floors, and antiques dating back to the 18th century. Rooms in the Empire Building are spacious and have a more contemporary Napoleon III style, featuring black and white tiled floors. Modern amenities including Wi-Fi and air conditioning come as standard in all rooms.
Location
La Mirande is just a short walk from the colossal 14th-century Palais des Papes (Papal Palace), the main site of Avignon. It's surrounded by cobbled streets dotted with restaurants and boutiques. The main train station is just a short drive away, connecting Avignon with the French Riviera and Paris by fast train. Roman archaeological sites and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region are easily accessible by car, and a scattering of quintessential hilltop towns are also just a short drive away.
Food and drink
The property has an excellent upscale restaurant. Chefs use herbs grown in the hotel's own garden to season their dishes. You can either dine indoors or outside on one of La Mirande’s multiple terraces, which are surrounded by olive trees and lavender. Lighter fare and beverages from the bar can also be enjoyed here while taking in views of the Palais des Papes.
Facilities and activities
During your stay here you can take part in cooking classes, which take place in an old cellar dating back to the 12th century.
