A two-hour drive northeast of the Khao Yai National Park, and deeper into Isaan's many provinces, you find Prasat Phimai.
Hindu-Buddhist shrine
One of the oldest surviving Khmer temple sites in the area it was originally constructed of red sandstone in the 10th and 11th centuries. This Hindu-Buddhist shrine pre-dates Angkor Wat, yet shares a number of stylistic attributes.
Due in part to a sensitive restoration project by the Fine Arts Department, Prasat Phimai has a unique quality with some of the most detailed Khmer lintel work still visible after a thousand years of weather, war and occupation.
