The pretty town of Burlington in Vermont sits at the edge of sparkling Lake Champlain.

The city was founded by a wealthy landowner, Ethan Allen, who also established the university here and today Burlington has a vibrant student population. The city is easily explored on foot, especially around the pedestrianized Church Street Marketplace, which is where the city's oldest buildings stand.

The Robert Hull Fleming Museum has an interesting collection of art and artifacts from all over the world whilst the Ethan Allen homestead offers an intriguing look at the life and times of Vermont's founding father. In Shelburne, just south of Burlington, lies the Shelburne Museum, a fifty acre collection of all things American which offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's history.

The best way to experience the lake is to take a cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen whilst keeping a look-out for Vermont's version of the Loch Ness monster.
