One of Canada’s great railway hotels, the Fort Garry Hotel was built in chateau style over 100 years ago and today combines old-world elegance with contemporary styling. The hotel is a National Historic Site and its grand interiors are lit by chandeliers and adorned with ornate plasterwork and marble floors.
Lawrence Oliver, Louis Armstrong and King George VI were all former guests and the hotel acted as a location for the film Capote. It's easy to see why as you walk down enormous corridors that lead to lounges and bars and link the 240 rooms and suites. The rooms retain much of their period charm and have original doors, high ceilings and some antique furniture but also feature contemporary decor in a classic but elegant style. Beds, pillows, linens and robes are all plush and refined and the large windows offer views over the bustling streets below.
Downstairs, the grand Palm Room still exudes an atmosphere of bygone days, with its domed, decorative ceiling and comfortable leather chairs. Lunch and dinner are served here and at night there's live music. The hotel also has a gym, pool and spa along with a steam room and complimentary yoga classes.
It's not every day that you have the opportunity to stay in a National Historic Landmark: the Fort Garry Hotel's rich history makes it one of Winnipeg's most intriguing hotels.

The 240 rooms and suites are individually decorated and blend Victorian Gothic detailing with contemporary glamour. High ceilings, large windows and original woodwork offer a sense of grace and elegance, while the mix of antique and modern furniture, faux fur blankets and photos on the walls gives a distinctive style. Attention to detail can be seen in the fine linens, feather pillows and the plush towels and robes. Bathrooms configuration differs with room category but all are spacious and modern. Large-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi come as standard.
Location
Fort Garry is located on Broadway in the heart of Winnipeg, just 100 m (328 ft) or so from the VIA Rail Station and within walking distance of the historic Forks District. It's less than a ten-minute walk to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and just 15 minutes' walk to the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

The hotel has a strong farm-to-fork policy and uses seasonal, local produce on its menus. Breakfast is served in the Broadway Breakfast Room and includes a range of homemade breads and pastries, house-cured bacon and eggs cooked to order. Lunch and dinner are served in the Palm Lounge — where you'll also find live music nightly — while the Gallery Deli offers a range of soups, salads and sandwiches.
Facilities and activities
The hotel has a well-equipped gym with an indoor running track and a spa offering a wide range of treatments as well as a whirlpool and steam room. There is also an indoor pool. Guests are also invited to join complimentary yoga classes held throughout the week.
