Located in the southwest corner of the territory, Fort Simpson lies at the confluence of two great rivers, the Mackenzie and the Liard.

An important gathering place for centuries, the Dene Nation calls the region 'Liidlii Kue', meaning 'the place where the rivers come together'.

Fur trading history

The town was established in 1803 as a fur trading post called 'Fort of the Forks', when it became a significant transport hub for river traffic, and even now it is an ideal base for exploring nearby Nahanni National Park.

Historic McPherson House, and the cabin of eccentric trapper Albert Faille, are also worth a visit.
