Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa Prefecture, the smallest county in Japan.

The city nevertheless boasts a population of 350,000 people and a long, colourful feudal history.

Exploring Takamatsu

The main draw to the island is the beautiful Ritsurin Garden, almost 400 years old and covering an area of 750,000 square metres.

There are plenty of other attractions for the visitor such as the ruins of the castle in Tamamo Park, the art and historical museums and the country's longest shopping centre at 2.7 km.

Getting there

There are two train stations in town — the JR station and just opposite this, the Kotoden Chikko station from which one can get out to the other attractions nearby including the Shikoku Mura folk village in Yashima, and the Kotohira-gu shrine.
