My fascination with Egypt and the Middle East began at primary school with a visit to the British Museum on a school trip. I was fascinated by hieroglyphs the sarcophagi of long dead kings and queens from a far away land, their stories told through mysterious carvings on ancient stones. From then I read every book, watched every TV show and documentary to fill my inquisitive mind with stories of gods, pharaohs and mummies.

From my first trip to Egypt in the early 2000s to my most recent trip in May 2023, my love and fascination for the country continued to deepen. To see and feel such tangible history, and to be able to reach out touch ancient monuments and art work that I had only previously seen behind glass or read about in books was incredible.

Giza Pyramids, Egypt

What's the one thing you always pack?

Especially when travelling to the Middle East it's important to pack a good moisturizer, a high SPF sunscreen and lip balm. The dry air will suck any moisture out of your skin so it鈥檚 important to have a protective barrier and to stay hydrated. I also always carry a water bottle with a built-in filter to eliminate some plastic waste when travelling. Most hotels these days will have fresh water so that you can top up your water bottle.

Siq trail leading to the Treasury, Petra, Jordan

What's your most vivid travel moment?

Walking through the Siq toward the Treasury in Petra was the ultimate bucket list travel moment for me. The sense of anticipation builds up as you get deeper in, the canyon walls become higher and the gap smaller. But then, the canyon opens up and the Treasury reveals itself. Glowing rose red, illuminated by the early morning sun, incredibly vast and every bit as breathtaking as I'd imagined it to be. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Errachidia Oasis, High Atlas Mountains

Where would you love to travel next?

I would love to explore more of Morocco, a country that holds an enduring fascination to me. Having spent a little time in Marrakesh a few years ago, it merely whet my appetite for more. My next trip will include the modern cities of Rabat and Casablanca. Although I am a city girl at heart, I love the great outdoors and hiking in the mountains makes me happy. I am excited to explore the High Atlas regions of Morocco to learn more about the Amazigh culture and traditions, and to trek North Africa鈥檚 highest Peak, Djebel Toubkal.
