Refugio Amazonas

The Southern Amazon, Peru

Refugio Amazonas is a well organized, comfortable lodge deep enough into the jungle to offer a fair chance of spotting wildlife. It's great for a few nights stay but it also works very well as a staging post for trips further into the Amazon.

The lodge itself is built out of local materials, and fits in well with the surroundings. The central lounge area is a great place to relax during the heat of the day or enjoy a refreshing drink after a day exploring in the jungle.

As you would expect with an isolated jungle lodge, rooms are not luxurious although more comfortable and well equipped than a lot of other lodges.

OUR OPINION:

Fantastic for an introductory visit to the Amazon rainforest, or ideal as a staging post to venture further into the Tambopata Reserve, this lodge is clean and simple with good food and guides. The walls of the rooms are thin and not very soundproof and electricity is only supplied during peak hours, however in reality all of this adds to the rainforest experience. The majority of the staff are local people from the nearby village of Infierno; therefore the lodge supports the local community in employment and revenue.

Rooms

Refugio Amazonas has two types of room, standard and superior. Both types are made out of local palm and wood, held together with clay. This does mean that walls are quite thin and we do recommend taking earplugs as noise does travel. The rooms are designed to be at one with the rainforest and only have three walls with a private open veranda facing the dense rainforest. There is electricity in guest rooms at certain parts of the day. All rooms contain a private bathroom with hot water and amenities, safe deposit box and mosquito nets. Superior rooms benefit from electricity until 10pm in the evening and free internet (although speeds can be quite slow).

Location

The lodge is situated in its own 200 hectare private reserve bordering the much larger Tambopata National Reserve, meaning guests really do feel deep within Peru's Southern Amazon. Travel time is around four to five hours by motorized canoe from Puerto Maldonado. The lodge itself is a short walk from the river bank and surrounded by forest on all sides.

Food and drink

All meals are included during your stay, due to the isolated nature of the lodge, however the good news is that the food is generally excellent. Meals are quite social affairs, as all guests eat at the same time, and you are usually sat with your guide and other members of the small groups you will be doing excursions with. Although choice is usually limited to a couple of buffet options at each meal, the quality of this food is usually very good and often uses fresh produce from the jungle. The lodge can cater for most dietary requirements, but please do confirm with your specialist as we do need to let the lodge know in advance.

Families

Refugio Amazonas offers an adventure playground and rainforest trail for kids.

Facilities and activities

As well as activities for children, the lodge boasts a wellness center offering massages and aromatherapy treatments.

In addition to the standard excursion package, those with kids or of a more active nature may wish to consider the lodge's 'soft adventure' program, which includes activities such as paddleboarding and tree climbing. If this is something you would like to discuss further please do have a chat with your specialist.
