In a series of short bursts, our safari specialist and Tanzania expert Mark showcases Nyerere National Park through the glory of its wildlife and its wetlands and grass plains. This southern reserve is, among other things, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being a largely untapped wilderness, the home of Africa’s largest lion population and the place where you can embark on one of Africa’s remotest safari experiences.

The Rufiji River intersects the reserve, breaking its bounds to feed into a network of channels and lagoons. In this watery setting, boat trips are very much a part of the safari, and you can watch pods of hippo as they laze with just their eyes and ears poking above the waterline.

On dry land, you might encounter giraffe, lion, wild dog, water buffalo and elephant, as well as smaller but no less dramatic species, such as the lilac-breasted roller.
