Lagoon Camp, Kwando Concession

Lagoon Camp

Kwando Concession, Botswana

Set beneath ebony and marula trees on the banks of the Kwando River, Lagoon Camp offers just eight exceptionally large canvas-and-thatch rooms directly facing the water. From your private deck, watch elephant herds coming to drink and listen to the snorts of hippo. Each room has an en suite bathroom, a dressing area and armchairs facing the river.

The camp鈥檚 main areas include a thatched dining area with a large communal table where meals are served, and a sitting area with a bar where you can help yourself to drinks. Outside, the boma is a good place to gather in the evening to share stories from your day and gaze at the stars. There鈥檚 also a decking area with a small pool and a double-swing seat. Shaded by trees, you can sit back and listen to birdsong while looking out for squirrels scrambling in the branches.聽

Activities from the camp are varied all year, with twice-daily game drives around the private Kwando Concession giving you a chance to see predators. Bush walks and fishing trips are also offered most of the year, while sunset boat trips along the river focus on the area鈥檚 birdlife, from malachite kingfishers to fish eagles.

OUR OPINION:

We鈥檝e found that Lagoon Camp offers some of the most spacious and comfortable rooms in Botswana, with a highly personal service to match and an excellent variety of activities offered year-round.

Excellent

Rooms

There are eight exceptionally spacious rooms, each with canvas sides and a high thatched roof. They鈥檙e spaced well apart along the river bank, with private decks looking out over the water. Inside is a sitting area with armchairs facing a large gauze window, twin or double beds and a dressing area. The large en suite bathroom boasts a clawfoot tub overlooking the river, double sinks and both indoor and outdoor showers. Polished wooden floors are furnished with ethnic-patterned rugs, and lots of gauze windows allow plenty of natural light and cooling breezes to filter through.

Location

In the far north of Botswana, close to the Namibian border, Lagoon Camp is situated in the private Kwando Concession, right on the banks of the Kwando River. This permanent water source means that evening boat trips are possible all year, and elephant can often be seen coming to drink from your room. As this is a private concession, game vehicles can go off-road in search of wildlife, including wild dog, cheetah and lion.

Food and drink

Light breakfasts are served around the boma at dawn, followed by a cooked brunch in the dining room after your morning activity. High tea, including lemonade, iced tea and pastries, is served in the late afternoon before you head out on your afternoon activity. In the evening, return to a hearty three-course meal around the communal dining table, illuminated by lanterns. You can help yourself to drinks from the bar throughout your stay.

Families

One of the rooms has an extra twin room to accommodate a family of four. Children must be aged six or older, and families with young children may need to have a private game vehicle.

Facilities and activities

Game drives around the concession are offered twice a day with both a tracker and guide. The afternoon game drive returns after dark, so you can look for nocturnal species under a flashlight. Sunset boat trips along the river are particularly good for seeing birdlife and hippo, and fishing trips are offered outside of the breeding season (January and February). You may also choose to head out on a bush walk as an alternative to a morning game drive, learning about finer aspects of the bush such as insects and plants.聽

Between activities, you can cool down in the pool or look out over the river from the double-swing seat. There鈥檚 also a small gift shop.

Environmental and social responsibility

Kwando Safaris, which owns the camp, is entirely owned by Botswana citizens, and almost all the staff at Lagoon Camp are local to Botswana. The camp鈥檚 electricity and water heating is solar powered, and all wastewater is treated above ground to avoid polluting the river.
