Vumbura Plains Camp is actually split into two seven-room camps, North Camp and South Camp, and whilst they're within walking distance, there are a couple of kilometres from the end of one camp to the other. A wealth of wildlife can be seen from the camp, with elephant occasionally visiting the grounds, walking behind the tents and feeding on the trees. Tree squirrels scuttle over the roofs and francolins scurry through the bushes.
Each camp has its own modern dining, lounge and bar area. Furnished in light woods, there are several spots with soft comfortable seating on which to relax, including out on the deck, around the fire or inside the covered main area. The smaller communal area at South Camp also has a couple of hanging pod chairs from which to gaze out over the floodplain.
This is a very relaxed, but stylish camp in a beautiful area. All the activities offered here are excellent, with some remarkable game living in the area. The mokoro trips in particular are superb for birds — especially sleeping groups of little bee-eaters.

Rooms
Raised boardwalks connect the spacious, uniquely designed and very stylish open-plan rooms. The decor has a Scandinavian feel, with light-coloured wood furnishings and huge mesh windows that offer panoramic views of the surrounding floodplains. Each room has a large, very comfortable bedroom, a lounge, a sala and en suite facilities with a shower, a flush toilet, and an outdoor shower under the stars. They also boast private plunge pools and large private decks with sun loungers. The emphasis here is on luxury, comfort and fantastic service.
Location
The Vumbura Concession is a wonderful game viewing area, perfect if you want a camp that offers you both dry land and water-based game viewing with the opportunity to see a wide variety of animal and birdlife.
Food and drink
Breakfast is served buffet-style, so you can enjoy your morning coffee with a warm pastry while sitting on the soft cushions out on the deck, before heading out on your activities. Dinner is a table d’hôte menu, served to you under the stars.
Families
Family accommodation is available in two rooms.
Facilities and activities
Activities from camp include game drives (including night drives), walking safaris and boating, when the water levels permit. We highly recommend a mokoro trip early one morning — these are scenic, relaxing trips that are great for seeing brightly coloured little bee-eaters lined up on papyrus, crakes, pygmy geese and night lilies closing, replaced by those that open during the day.
Environmental and social responsibility
Vumbura Plains is part of the Okavango Community Trust, which manage the affairs of the local community. Conscious of its ecological footprint, sewage and grey water at Vumbura Plains is treated in an above ground sewage plant, ensuring that the water is clean before being allowed to enter the natural environment. The camp is also a partner with the Botswana Lion Genetics Study and Pack for a Purpose, a non-profit organisation that provides travellers with up-to-date information about required supplies for community-based projects.
Alternative places to stay nearby
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favourite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can't be bettered.
