This early morning excursion will take you through the numerous trails surrounding your lodge. The famous resplendent quetzal is seen in San Gerardo de Dota year round but April and May are the best months to spot the striking birds. However, these highlands are also the natural habitat of an immense diversity of flora and avifauna. Some, including the Cipresillo (Oak tree: quercus costarricense) are endemic, found only in this part of the world.
You will also see hundreds of species of bromelias, lichen, moss, ferns, and a multitude of orchids and colourful flowers such as guesneracias.
In addition to the quetzal, among the many bird species you will find the unique silky-flycatcher, the coppery-headed emerald hummingbird, the cerise-throated hummingbird and the peg-billed finch, all endemic to the area.
