Domaine de La Tortinière, Veigne

Domaine de la Tortinière

The Loire Valley, France

The towering trees that line the private drive leading up to this imposing 19th-century chateau hint at the level of grandeur this property possesses. Built in elaborate, romantic style with lofty turrets and sweeping steps, Domaine de la Tortinière has the air of a stately yet intimate family home.

Inside, you'll find exposed beams, antique furnishings and inviting fireplaces. The rooms in the main house are spacious and elegant yet understated, while those in Le Pressoir, a half-timbered building directly behind the castle, have a slightly more modern style.

L’Orangerie, the light-filled restaurant, offers far-reaching views across the park and an extensive menu of seasonal dishes. There is also a small spa on site.

OUR OPINION:

Authentic, elegant and peaceful, the Domaine de la Tortinière is one of our preferred chateaux in the Loire. It is ideally located to explore the area and the service is impeccable.

Rooms

Guest rooms mix classical styles with modern touches and are located either in the main building or the half-timbered houses just next door. Large wooden beams and thick stone walls are a reminder of the heritage of staying in a 19th-century chateau, while the toile de jouy fabric and local antiques are reminiscent of classic French and regional traditions. Some of the rooms have a terrace and all include views of the park, valley, or gardens as well as air conditioning, flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi. Bathrooms vary and offer a bath and/or a shower depending on configuration. For the ultimate chateau experience upgrade to a suite in one of the hotel’s original turrets.

Location

A secluded hideaway set within its own vast, wooded park criss-crossed by walking trails and traversed by the Indre River, the Domaine de la Tortinière makes a peaceful and convenient base for visiting the main chateaux and medieval towns of the Loire Valley. Chinon and Amboise are both within a 45-minute drive and the nearest train station is around 25 minutes' away.

Food and drink

Guests can enjoy exceptional cuisine and service in L’Orangerie, the light-filled restaurant that opens out onto a large terrace overlooking the hotel’s pool and wooded parkland. All meals are made using local ingredients, such as truffle, pigeon and goat’s cheese, and are paired with fine wine by the in-house sommelier. You can also enjoy a whisky or cocktail in the welcoming bar with its billiard table, stone fireplace and comfortable leather armchairs.

Families

Staff at the Domaine de la Tortinière work hard to ensure that all guests are enjoying themselves. Families have access to the tennis courts, indoor table tennis, bicycle hire and a range of children's toys and games. Parents will also appreciate the nutritious, child-friendly menu in the restaurant. Staff are always on hand to suggest local activities for families and babysitting services are available on request.

Facilities and activities

Domaine de la Tortinière encourages guests to explore the numerous walking paths through the grounds and also offers bicycle rental. Equally, you can relax and enjoy the tennis court or outdoor heated swimming pool, borrow the hotel’s small rowing boat for a fishing trip or a leisurely cruise down the river, or unwind in the small spa with its sauna and beauty services.

Accessibility

Not all guest rooms are accessible via an elevator but rooms for travellers with limited mobility are available on request. Please note if an accessibility room is needed when booking.
