Set in the heart of the medieval hilltop town of Saint-Émilion is the exclusive Hostellerie de Plaissance. This five-star property has an enviable location overlooking the rooftops and square below as well as offering panoramic views of the vineyards all around the town.
As a Relais & Chateaux property, you can expect a considered combination of characterful decor, personal service and gourmet food. Wooden beams, spiral staircases and stone walls showcase regional heritage, while the 17 stylish, modern rooms are decorated in a comfortable, contemporary design.
The main building, dating back to the 12th century, is a protected monument and as such does not have a spa or swimming pool. However, it does boast a large terrace and generous grounds. Guests can enjoy breakfast with a view from the terrace, while the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant attracts diners from across the globe who come for the gourmet food with a regional focus as well as the expert wine pairings. The hotel also has a second, less formal restaurant offering dining in a walled garden in warmer months.
We love this hotel for its enviable location, its views over the vineyards from its large terrace, its traditional yet modern decor, and for its friendly and professional staff.

Rooms
The 17 rooms and suites are spread across the main building, the village house and the vineyard house which is outside of town. All rooms are named after award-winning, wine-producing chateaux in the region and are decorated in a classic but contemporary style that reflects their regional heritage. The rooms are individually decorated and vary considerably but all contain a well-chosen selection of antique furniture, feature wallpaper and patterned fabrics that are complemented by Wi-Fi and air conditioning, and, of course, the peaceful setting.
Location
³§²¹¾±²Ô³Ù-ɳ¾¾±±ô¾±´Ç²Ô is less than an hour’s drive from Bordeaux to the west, and two hours from ³§²¹°ù±ô²¹³Ù-±ô²¹-°ä²¹²Ôé»å²¹ to the east. The three destinations are connected by train, making this the central point between the main highlights of the region. Hostellerie de Plaissance is located at the top of the hill near the Église Collégiale and boasts far-reaching views of the valley. The main square, Place du Marché au Bois, is a short walk down the cobbled streets past little independent boutiques and restaurants.
Food and drink
The hotel’s two restaurants are renowned for their food and wine. Sleek and stylish La Table de Plaissance has two Michelin stars and serves refined regional dishes and top-quality wines. The more informal L’Envers du Décor wine bar pairs traditional French bistro-style dishes with the region’s finest wines which can be served by the glass. Diners can choose to eat indoors by the fireplace, in the lively counter room or, in warmer months, in the walled garden. There’s also a large open-air terrace where guests can enjoy their breakfast while taking in the view.
Facilities and activities
Although there’s no spa or swimming pool, the hotel has a fitness room and is able to provide electric bicycles for guests to rent.
