Built on an ancient Roman site and echoing the simple architectural style of a Roman stone villa, this hotel exudes understated elegance but with an intrinsically French atmosphere. Cypress trees, box and lavender line the wide pathways between the hotel’s three buildings, terrace and swimming pool, which has views of the Dordogne Valley below.
Located just a few miles outside the medieval town of ³§²¹°ù±ô²¹³Ù-±ô²¹-°ä²¹²Ôé»å²¹, on the banks of the Dordogne River, this boutique property allows easy exploration of the region while still offering a quiet refuge from the busy towns and popular historic sights close by. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner, serving local seasonal dishes.
The 17 rooms and suites are spacious and comfortable, and offer views of the park, the courtyard or the pool. All have air conditioning and free Wi-Fi and many can accommodate children.
We love this hotel for its secluded location, elegant architecture and relaxed atmosphere. The swimming pool overlooking the valley was a definite hit with us, and the proximity to Sarlat and the region’s major attractions gave us plenty of options for exploring.

Rooms
The 17 rooms and suites are decorated in contemporary French country style. Some have wooden beams, stone walls and a rustic air, in keeping with the region, while others are more modern and minimalist. Most are spacious and offer views of the park, the courtyard or the pool. All rooms have an en suite shower or bathroom, a TV, free Wi-Fi and air conditioning.
Location
Located just under 8 km (5 miles) from the medieval town of ³§²¹°ù±ô²¹³Ù-±ô²¹-°ä²¹²Ôé»å²¹, La Villa Romaine is ideally situated for exploration of the Dordogne region. Château des Milandes, once home to celebrated American jazz singer Josephine Baker, is only a 20-minute drive away, as are the manicured gardens of Château de Marqueyssac. The Lascaux cave, with its Stone-Age wall paintings, is close by.
Food and drink
The restaurant is open from May to the end of October, for breakfast and dinner only, and you have the option of sitting out on the terrace when the weather is fine. Breakfast is a classic continental buffet of homemade jams and pastries as well as fresh local bread. Dinner comprises seasonal dishes typical of the region. If you’d like to try the local restaurants, there are many to choose from in nearby Sarlat, a short drive away.
Families
A family suite on the ground floor accommodates up to six people and comprises a large living room with sleeper sofa, two separate bedrooms and a bathroom. The duplex suite has two beds in the living room, a separate bedroom and a bathroom. There’s also a large triple room that would suit a couple with one child, and the hotel can supply an extra bed in many of the other rooms at your request.
Facilities and activities
The hotel can arrange for rental bicycles to be brought to the property. There’s also a swimming pool and outdoor seating, as well as a reading room with games and DVDs.
Alternative places to stay nearby
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favourite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can't be bettered.
