Traditional and hospitable, the Hotel Reichsküchenmeister is one of the oldest hotels in Bavaria. As you step inside the main building you might sense an atmosphere of time standing still, as the hotel has remained largely unchanged for 800 years. The half-timbered and pastel painted exterior complementing the historic surroundings.
Reichsküchenmeister effectively translates as “Master Chefs of the Empire”, the name not referring to the hotel’s culinary pursuits, but rather with its history of maintaining law and order in the town of Rothenburg. Unsurprisingly for somewhere so old, the building has hosted many notable figures throughout history, such as Emperor Ferdinand I, and Roman Emperor Charles V in the 16th century.
Despite the age of the building, you will not compromise on comfort during a stay here. There are several dining options, picturesque places to enjoy a drink, and an on-site spa which is complimentary for hotel guests.
OUR OPINION:
This hotel is a great example of Bavarian hospitality and a family-run hotel. The location is perfect for exploring the city and the biergarten is a delightful spot enjoy a drink with fellow guests and locals.
The hotel鈥檚 49 rooms are divided between the original house and another building located opposite, which was formerly the Viktoria Cinema. The original house has traditional rooms, including two suites, which are well-appointed but rustic in style. The contemporary-style rooms are housed in the other building, these are decorated stylishly in various, muted hues. All rooms come with the modern amenities one would expect, such as a private bathroom, TV, safe and Wi-Fi.
Location
Situated in the middle of the medieval city with views of the imposing St Jacob鈥檚 Church, the hotel is well located for exploring the surrounding winding streets. The Rothenburg ob der Tauber Train Station is 1 km (0.6 miles) away and on-site parking is available, making this a good base for any of Rothenburg鈥檚 excursions, or for exploring the many shops dotted along the city鈥檚 cobblestones.
Food and drink
Hotel Reichsküchenmeister has several dining options including the main restaurant where guests come for the rich breakfast buffet each morning. During lunch and dinner, guests choose from the à la carte menu, which features a selection of Franconian Specialities, all freshly prepared by the kitchen team. Just off the main restaurant is the cosier Lupoldstube, an alcove with a few dining tables, wooden walls, original tile stove and medieval atmosphere. Guests can also enjoy drinks in the Wine Tavern Lochle, famous for local Franconian wines and open late into the evening, the Lochle is often frequented by locals fostering a spirit of "Gemütlichkeit”. There is a biergarten on the terrace during the warmer months, which is transformed into a Christmas Garden in the winter.
