To really get off the beaten track in Guatemala, travel east to the Rio Dulce, board a boat and head downstream, eventually arriving in Livingston on the shores of the Caribbean.
Heritage
Livingston is heavily influenced by the Garifuna people who have evolved here from their Afro-Caribbean roots. Many years ago this region was populated by migrants from the island of St Vincent, and this community brings a strong flavour of Caribbean culture to this part of Guatemala.
Livingston is far from your typical Caribbean destination however — the main activity in the area is fishing, accommodation is basic and the beaches are not of white sand. Nevertheless for those fascinated by different societies and wanting to see an alternative side to Guatemala this is an intriguing place to visit.
Access is only by boat down the Rio Dulce, passing beautiful scenery and a natural hot spring.
