Dating back to the 11th century, the Castello di Spaltenna is a former medieval stronghold that has been converted into a characterful Tuscan hotel. It is set in glorious countryside just below the historic walled village of Vertine, an extremely tranquil and beautiful location.
The old building imposes a great sense of history on the hotel and the rooms are decorated in a traditional Tuscan style but comfortably equipped with all modern conveniences including Wi-Fi and air conditioning. While the majority of rooms are located in the main building with views of the central courtyard or surrounding landscape, a number are in the gardens and a converted stable block.
Entering the atmospheric courtyard, you’ll find the property’s signature restaurant, Il Pievano which was awarded a Michelin star in 2017. The immaculate grounds hold a charming outdoor swimming pool and well-equipped spa complex with an indoor pool. One level below, there is also a small fitness area with panoramic views across the valley.
Perfect for those looking for an authentic Tuscany stay, we love the hotel’s historic feel and find that the extensive range of facilities make it one of the better options for families.

Rooms
Beamed ceilings, original fireplaces and terracotta floors gives the rooms at the Castello di Spaltenna a rustic charm, while warm earthy tones and modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, cable TV and air conditioning offer contemporary comfort. Some rooms complete the romantic offering with four-poster beds. While the majority of rooms are located in the main building with views of the central courtyard or surrounding landscape, a number of other rooms have been created in the nearby outbuildings — including an annex in the gardens by the spa and a selection in the newly renovated stable block. Bathrooms feature shower or shower over bath.Â
Location
The glorious location is a highlight of the property. Guests staying here will have easy access to a number of hiking trails right on the door step and just a short walk up the hill is the historic walled village of Vertine where the property also runs a small wine bar.
Food and drink
The property’s signature restaurant, Il Pievano, is set in the atmospheric courtyard and was awarded a Michelin star in 2017. Its menu of traditional specialties has been brought up to date by head chef Vincenzo Guarino, who also oversees affairs at the idyllic La Terrazza where you can lunch on lighter dishes with a similar focus on seasonal ingredients and the rich local food heritage. During the evenings in summer there is also the option to dine at L'Osteria which serves up traditional Tuscan fare.
Facilities and activities
The hotel's outdoor pool is nestled in the gorgeous gardens below the castle but in the winter months guests can also swim in an indoor heated pool in the well-equipped spa. The spa offers a range of treatments as well as a sauna and steam room, while one level below, there is also a small fitness area with panoramic views across the valley.
