Fujioto Inn is a traditional Japanese property set in the heart of Tsumago that has been owned by the Fujihara family for many generations. Although the rooms are simple, and toilet and bath facilities communal, the bright spaces, central garden and convenient location in the village more than make up for this.
The welcoming Fujihara family also add to your stay as they make you feel at home and share their passion and knowledge of the region. The food here is delicious, ensuring that a stay at Fujioto will remain with you for a very long time after your visit to Japan.
Over the years, Fujioto Inn has become one of our favourite properties in the whole of Japan, and never ceases to receive excellent feedback from guests who stay there.

Rooms
Rooms at the Fujioto are in line with the typical traditional Japanese inn style, with tatami floors and futon beds. There are two rooms on the first floor that can accommodate two to three people, while the second floor rooms are larger and more private, making them great for families or couples looking for a more secluded stay. The large windows present beautiful views of the gardens, and in the spring you can see the cherry blossoms blooming. We love the upper floor rooms; however, as the bathrooms are communal and located on the first floor this could be a slight inconvenience.Â
Location
Fujioto is one of the most conveniently located inns in Tsumago. The main road of Tsumago is just steps from the front of Fujioto, where you can spend the day browsing the traditional shops, visiting the great Nagiso-Machi Museum located a few buildings down, or trekking along the Nakasendo Highway. The property is also very close to the bus stop should you wish to venture further afield.Â
Food and drink
The excellent food at Fujioto always receives rave reviews, with many guests deeming the delicious local cuisine served each night as ‘outstanding’ and others remarking that it's ‘unusual, but definitely worth a try’. Dishes include home-grown and seasonal produce, such as rice from the local paddy fields and fresh trout caught in the Nakatsugawa River, which runs in front of town.Â
Please note that Fujioto can't prepare vegetarian or allergen-free meals. This is borne primarily out of concern for their guests, as they worry that they'll not be able to provide an adequate standard or alternative meal option. As a result, if you have any dietary requirements, this is unfortunately not the ryokan for you.Â
Facilities and activities
The communal baths are made from scented Kiso Valley cypress wood, making them truly authentic. Guests can also find peace and tranquillity in the Japanese-style gardens that surround the property, filled with green foliage and carp ponds.Â
