The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon

Tokyo, Japan

The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon is a small hotel by Tokyo standards, with an authentic boutique feel. The hotel is in the historic Asakusa area of Tokyo, which feels a world away from the likes of the modern Shinjuku district of the city. The Gate provides first class views of the Tokyo Skytree — a great way to view it is from the hotel’s exclusive private terrace. This hotel is convenient to the Tokyo subway to enable you to get around the city easily.

Rooms range from modest semi doubles all the way up to luxurious suites. The hotel has all the modern amenities typical in Japan, such as Wi-Fi, toiletries, and laundry service.

OUR OPINION:

Located in Asakusa, The Gate Hotel is in a great location to explore this cultural side of the city. The rooms are tastefully decorated and of reasonable size, but the best part of the property is the fantastic rooftop seating area with fabulous views over the city.

The hotel has various rooms ranging from their aptly named ‘Modest’ semi-double, all the way up to a luxury two bedroom suite, some of which even have the option of a balcony. One of the most popular rooms is the ‘Classy Room’, offering plenty of space for a comfortable double, twin or even triple bed configuration, as well as a separate seating area to enjoy the fabulous views out over the city. All rooms have an en suite bathroom as well as extra amenities such as Nespresso machine, bathrobes and a robust toiletry selection.

Location

Located in Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s more traditional neighbourhoods, there is easy access to the famous Senso-ji temple. It’s a short walk to several subway lines, the closest being the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line at Asakusa Station, just a two-minute walk. Hoppy Street (or Hoppy Dori as it’s locally known), is a great spot to enjoy some casual street food near this hotel. It is also close to Ueno, home to Ueno Park where there is a great selection of museums. Tokyo Skytree is a short subway ride away.

Food and drink

  • An à la carte breakfast is served daily in the hotel restaurant.
  • R Restaurant & Bar offers lunch and dinner, offering a variety of dishes including a set menu, which is often a typical dining option in Japan.
  • B Bar offering drinks throughout the evening, with a variety of beverages including beer, wine, whiskey, and cocktails.

Families

  • There is an option for interconnecting ‘Essential Twin’ rooms, which work well for families.
  • Specific amenities for children can be requested such as a crib, a child’s toilet seat and bed rails (only certain room types can accommodate cribs, these are also subject to availability).

Accessibility

The hotel is wheelchair accessible throughout, with the ‘Universal Room’ category especially adapted to suit. There are also a limited number of wheelchairs to rent from reception, although these must be requested in advance.
