Tiritiri Matangi is a world-renowned bird sanctuary off the coast of Auckland. You depart Auckland wharf at 9.00am and cruise for 45 minutes along the coastline to the island. Here you will be met by the Department of Conservation Rangers who will welcome you to the island before introducing you to the Supporters of Tiritiri volunteers. These volunteers will take you on a guided walk from the wharf to the lighthouse, which takes around an hour.
You will hike through the native bush on well-formed tracks and boardwalks as your guide identifies fauna, bird species and birdsong, as well as many other points of interest along the way. You are then free in the afternoon to spend time at the visitor centre or continue wandering around the island at your own leisure, before departing on the ferry at 3.30pm.
