Snowmobiling in Northern Norway

Snowmobiling across Finnmarksvidda plateau

Snowmobiling in Northern Norway

Few people ever glimpse the Finnmarksvidda plateau when it’s decked out in its wintry best, but this snowmobiling adventure gives you a chance to explore the landscape up close. Follow in the footsteps of 19th-century reindeer herders on a guided snowmobile exploration through a vast Arctic wilderness. You might also spot wildlife as you zip along what was once Norway’s longest postal route.

You’ll meet your guide at a 150-year-old lodge nestled at the edge of a deep-green fir forest. This was once a part of a network of lodges that offered refuge for those making the then-perilous journey across the plains. Learn about the history of both the lodge and the region before sitting down to a hearty Norwegian lunch.

After eating, you’ll be kitted out in the necessary gear to keep you warm in the fiercely frigid weather before heading off into the wilderness of one of Europe’s largest mountain plateaus.

Your adventure begins at a rustic lodge located about a 30-minute drive outside of the city of Alta. Your guide will introduce you to the lodge’s long history and its role as a shelter for those who dared to traverse the vast, windswept plateau. You’ll also learn about the natural and human history of Finnmarksvidda, which is also home to Sámi reindeer herders.

After enjoying a Norwegian lunch, you’ll be shown how to operate the snowmobile and given basic safety instructions. Then, boarding the vehicle, you’ll head out into the plains. You and your passenger will take turns driving, though you can also opt to have a snowmobile all to yourself. This experience is a great option for children over the age of 12.

As you speed across the snowy fields, you’ll have the rare chance to admire northern Norway’s bleak but beautiful tundra. You might glimpse some of the wildlife that eke out a living here — snowshoe hares, Arctic foxes, and moose, as well as reindeer herds.

At the furthest point of the loop, you’ll pause at another lodge for a warming cup of coffee and traditional waffle. Your entire journey should take about six hours.
