The Pilanesberg is one of the more unusual areas of South Africa, home to both Sun City and the beautiful, strange landscape of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. When Sol Kerzner was looking for somewhere to build his fantasy palace, he chose well, as everything here seems otherworldly. As you drive round the game reserve, hidden valleys and vivid green primeval bush are on every side, and you can well imagine turning a corner and meeting a dinosaur.
What you will actually encounter are good stocks of indigenous game: the Big Five all roam the reserve, as do leopard and the rare wild dog. The game is in good concentrations, thanks to an extensive restocking programme, and although vehicles cannot leave the road in pursuit of game, you will still see a wonderful array of animals.
