Matthew

Southeast Asia, Alaska & Maldives Specialist

I started my career in travel more than 18 years ago as a commercial pilot. Not wanting to miss the action on the ground, I soon changed gears and began organising group travel to destinations throughout North America.

In 2013 I joined Audley as a founding member of their Boston office, specialising in travel throughout Southeast Asia. Through annual trips over the past years I gained a significant insight into the cultural highlights within the region. Some of my most memorable trips include island-hopping in Thailand, sunrise ballooning in Myanmar, trying the street cuisine in Vietnam, and sleeping under the stars in the remote jungles of Borneo.

I currently reside just south of Boston with my wife and two daughters, where I enjoy short weekend trips throughout New England and also working on my historical house, owned by the last direct descendant of the legendary Paul Revere.

Nancy and family in Southeast Asia

Scott and Nancy Perlson travelled to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia for 19 days in December 2018, organised by Matt

From our first interaction with Matt enquiring about doing this trip, to the wheels of the plane touching down at O’Hare after almost three weeks abroad, our experience has been incredible. We have travelled quite a bit and have worked with a number of different travel companies over the years, and as a result I feel confident in sharing our highest praise of Matt and the Audley team. Our trip was made even more extraordinary because of the professional care and attention to detail that allows a trip with so many moving parts to come off seamlessly. Thank you!
River Kwai, Kanchanaburi

I recommend visiting - Kanchanaburi & The River Kwai, Thailand

As a war history buff, I'd recommend adding Kanchanaburi to your itinerary. Located only three hours outside of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is the historical site of the Burma Railway (aka Death Railway) that was built by World War II Japanese prisoners of war, as well as the infamous Bridge on the River Kwai and Hellfire Pass. We arrived to the bridge aboard a long boat and took a local 90-minute train ride to Hellfire Pass. Along the route we visited World War II museums and trekked a short portion of the route through Hellfire Pass.

Pool at Jaya House River Park

I recommend staying at - Jaya House River Park, Cambodia

First Class

A five-minute complimentary tuk tuk ride away from central Siem Reap, the Jaya House is a true retreat to return to after a day of visiting the temples of Angkor. The rooms are elegantly, yet smartly appointed, the beds are some of the best in Southeast Asia, and the service takes this resort to another level. Be sure to take advantage of the included tuk tuk service to town, daily spa treatments, and daily minibar. On top of this, the value proposition makes the Jaya House River Park standout among crowded competition in Siem Reap.

I'll never forget when…

I camped out on board a private houseboat deep in the rainforest in Borneo. My private guide and I spent the day exploring the rainforest in search of wild orangutans and other unique wildlife including crocodiles, proboscis, and grey monkeys. In the evening I enjoyed a home-cooked meal followed by the biggest surprise of all; the crew pulled the boat into a clearing where you could enjoy the most magnificent stargazing with perfectly clear skies due to the lack of light pollution.
