The Great Zimbabwe Hotel is the oldest hotel in the Masvingo region having opened in 1905, and is the only one within walking distance of the archaeological site. The setting is beautiful, with poinsettias the size of trees, lawns edged with flowering bushes, and a sparkling pool shaded by ancient trees.
There are 38 basic rooms, overlooking the lush garden courtyard; the rooms are large but furnishings and facilities modest. The Great Zimbabwe Hotel has one cocktail bar and a restaurant serving simple food. There is rather unusually a tennis and volleyball court as well as swimming pool. A few paces away, in what is now the central courtyard, stood the rondavel belonging to Cecil Rhodes, this burned to the ground in the 60s after it was struck by lightning, a plaque still marks where it once stood.
