Khwai Tented Camp, Khwai Concession

Khwai Tented Camp

Khwai Concession, Botswana

Khwai Tented Camp, in the community-owned Khwai Concession, offers a warm, welcoming and peaceful stay in six spacious and tents, each one set on a raised deck overlooking a seasonal lagoon or a green floodplain, depending on the time of year. From your shaded deck, you can sit and watch baboons playing and grooming each other, while birds such as paradise flycatchers might settle on a tree right in front of you. The open-plan main area is light and airy, with sofas and a long dining table set facing the water.聽

Guides take you out on game drives, and in the dry season, bush walks and mokoro trips, sharing their knowledge and passion for the concession鈥檚 wildlife. Moremi Game Reserve borders the concession, and wildlife is free to roam between the two, including lion prides, packs of wild dog, hyena and impala.

OUR OPINION:

We鈥檝e found this to be one of the most welcoming camps in Botswana, with excellent guides and a real family-feel to the communal areas. While the tents are a little close together, they remain well hidden by the surrounding foliage.

Excellent

Rooms

There are just six canvas tents for up to 12 guests, each one generous in size with a furnished private deck, large double or twin beds, a standing fan and an en suite bathroom to the rear, including both indoor and outdoor showers. Set among trees and foliage, the tents rest on raised decking looking out over a seasonal lagoon and the surrounding bush.

Location

On the eastern fringes of the Okavango Delta, the camp is situated on the community-run Khwai Concession, which borders Moremi Game Reserve to the east. The airstrip is just a 15-minute game drive away. Within the concession and game reserve is a rich concentration of animals, from predators such as lion, hyena and wild dog to red lechwe, elephant and birds such as woodland kingfishers, carmine bee-eaters and brown snake eagles.

Food and drink

Light continental breakfasts are served in the communal tent before morning game drives, with a more hearty brunch prepared for your return. High tea, comprising fresh lemonade, ice tea and coffee, pastries and cakes, is set out prior to the afternoon game drive. In the evening, a three-course dinner is served around a communal dining table either in the main tent or out in the boma area by candlelight. All food and drink is included in your stay.

Families

Children must be aged seven or over. Those aged under 16 are unable to take part in walking safaris, although nature walks around the camp are offered for younger guests.

Facilities and activities

The camp offers twice-daily game drives around the concession and into Moremi Game Reserve, with the afternoon game drive usually continuing until after dark to give you a chance to see nocturnal wildlife such as African wild cat, bush babies, spring hares and owls. You can join guided bush walks and mokoro trips during the dry season (May to October), and there鈥檚 the option to visit the local village to learn more about the area鈥檚 culture.聽

On site, cool down in the small pool or relax on one of the loungers. There鈥檚 no Wi-Fi, but charging points are available in the communal tent.

Environmental and social responsibility

A portion of the camp鈥檚 proceeds is fed back into local community projects and facilities via the Khwai Community Trust. Designed to have minimal impact on the environment, there are no permanent structures, the whole camp is solar powered, and guests are given reusable metal water bottles to reduce the amount of plastic bottles used.
