Based on its very own section of the Great Barrier Reef, Heron Island is a great location for those who want to enjoy swimming, snorkeling and diving, just minutes from the white sandy beach. The island's lush interior is home to hundreds of birds, including curious noddy terns, and of course herons — the island's namesake. With a small University of Queensland research station nestled among the native bush; loggerhead and green turtles nesting on the beach during February and March and migrating humpback whales off the shore from June to July, Heron Island is a haven for wildlife lovers and naturally follows a strong ecological theme.
Heron Island is one of the few places where you can take a guided walk along the reef and learn more about the unique ecology of this ancient reef system. Activities on the island vary from a relaxing massage, or a wine and cheese sunset cruise to fishing trips, scenic flights, diving courses and much more: making it the ideal destination for families and couples alike.
Accommodation ranges from the basic, clean and comfortable Turtle Rooms and Reef Suites, to beachfront Heron Suites and the spacious Wistari and Point Suites or private Beach House. Your stay on Heron Island includes a buffet style breakfast and lunch, a three course table d'hôte or themed buffet dinner, served every day in the main restaurant.
