Stranraer Homestead

Set on a rise overlooking the sheep pastures of the center of Kangaroo Island, Stranraer is a handsome country homestead that has been restored by owners Graham and Lyn Wheaton.

The homestead is a model of functional simplicity and country style, with ornate molded ceilings, fire places in nearly every room, romantic antique furnishings and a warm country kitchen.

The broad veranda looks onto the pretty garden and sheep pastures beyond, which dip gently toward two vast shallow lagoons that are a favorite roosting ground for the island's water birds. For the more active, Graham will take you on a guided tour of the 3,000 acre sheep farm or you could even try a game of cricket on the homestead's impeccably maintained pitch.

Stranraer's food will be a highlight of your stay and the island's magnificent oysters often make an appearance at the table.

The four guest rooms are all lovely and bursting with character. One room has an en suite bathroom whilst the others have adjacent private bathrooms.

      Exceptional Kangaroo Island

Twelve thousand years ago Kangaroo Island was part of mainland Australia. The Ice Age and low sea levels allowed the Island to be populated with an amazing array of wildlife. Kangaroo Island’s plants and animals are now isolated and are clearly different from their mainland relatives.
