Not for the faint-hearted this is a truly adventurous excursion. Actun Tunichil Muknal, meaning "Cave of the Stone Sepulcher" is one of the most impressive caves in the Maya lowland. Located in the heart of the rainforest, the cave was a sacred place to the prehistoric Maya of Belize, who first began to use the entrance during 300 to 600 AD.
The cave consists of a series of chambers, ending in a 300 x 50 meter Cathedral, where sacrificial ceremonies once took place. After an exciting drive to the trailhead, you will trek for 45 minutes through the dense jungle in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and wade across three streams.
At the cave entrance, you will be kitted out with the necessary safety equipment to prepare you for the caving adventure ahead. You will be swimming inside the cave, as well as clambering over rocks and passing through tight spaces. This is a first class caving and archaeological experience.
Time in the cave is approximately three hours before you return to the vehicle and back to the hotel. All safety equipment including hard hats and flashlights is provided.
