Housed in a large Provençal manor house that was once a private home, the Domaine de Fontenille is an idyllic spot that hosted lavish balls for 17th century nobles who would promenade through its extensive gardens. The grounds here are enormous with a large outdoor terrace overlooking parklands dotted with fountains and huge cedar trees. Though very grand in size, this hotel has a mere 18 guest rooms and maintains the atmosphere of a sophisticated private home with its intimate atmosphere, reading rooms and inviting stone fireplaces.
Ideally situated in the Lubéron region, where many of Provence’s best villages and sights are located, the Domaine de Fontenille is also just a short drive away from the winding cobbled streets of Lourmarin where you can find local independent boutiques and restaurants. Alternatively, one can easily choose to remain at the hotel, take in the scenery, have dinner at the Michelin-starred-restaurant, Le Champ des Lunes, or watch the sun set with an apéritif in hand on the large outdoor terrace.
Exuding grandeur from its peaceful setting, the Domaine de Fontenille is characteristically Provençal. We love it for its location in the heart of the beautiful Lubéron and for that large, enticing outdoor terrace overlooking the park.

Rooms
The bright, light-flooded rooms and suites here are all different yet quite spacious. Elegantly refined yet understated, they are styled with a palette of neutral tones and feature crisp linens set against wooden floors, and have views looking out over the pool, the park or the forest dotted with cedar trees. Modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, televisions, and air conditioning come as standard here, while the roomy bathrooms feature large walk-in showers or separate baths or both.
Location
The Domaine de Fontenille is in the heart of Provence in the Lubéron region to the east of Avignon. The property provides an oasis for relaxation but you can also take a 10 to 15 minute drive to the nearby hilltop village of Lourmarin to explore the meandering cobbled streets dotted with restaurants and boutiques covered in creeping vines. Some of Provence’s most renowned sites are also in the Lubéron region, including the hilltop village of Gordes and the Abbey de Sénaque.
Food and drink
The Domaine de Fontenille is home to two restaurants both serving creative cuisine made with local produce. The more upscale of the two, Le Champ des Lunes, boasts a Michelin star and the other, La Cuisine d’Amélie is a bistro-style eatery with a large outdoor terrace known locally for its views over the countryside. We recommend coming here to have an apéritif and take in the sunset over the landscape of the Lubéron.
Families
There are a variety of animals onsite such as lambs, chickens and donkeys, and there is also a farm experience on offer where you can pick fresh fruit.
Facilities and activities
This property is home to an art gallery which showcases local art and photography. There is also a heated swimming pool and semi-electric bikes available to rent. In the summer, yoga is available as well as, on some nights, outdoor movies and jazz evenings.
