Alchi, at an altitude of 3,120 meters, contains one of the oldest temples in the area.
Known for its beautifully delicate painted shrines, some of which date back to the late 11th century, these temples contain some of the rarest and most extensive examples of Buddhist art in the Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakhi regions. The murals are painted with diluted semi-precious stones, so remain vivid and detailed.
Alchi, unlike other monasteries in the region, is located on flat land rather than up a steep hill or mountain. Located thus in the village, it is very easy to explore by foot. The surrounding village contains a nice market. Although designed with the tourist in mind, it is an excellent place for shopping without harassment and there are most definitely bargains to be had. Staying in the Alchi area also provides easy access to large parts of Ladakh, especially along the Indus.
Some of the finest scenery in the area can be seen with a short trip to Rizong monastery and nunnery, and the spectacular ruins at Basgo can all be done easily and conveniently. Close by, there are a number of popular hiking routes starting from Likir — tending toward Temisgam further along the valley.
