Nestled in a remote valley, Delphi Lodge is a historic, vine-covered country manor at the head of a steely lake. Surrounded by wild mountain scenery, it has an air of unbridled romance and a stay feels like visiting a wealthy friend with impeccable taste.
Utterly unpretentious, quietly indulgent and warmly intimate, there are just 13 charming rooms, many of which have spectacular mountain views. Period details abound including log fires, deeply snug armchairs, a mellow library and a billiards room. None of the rooms have locks and dining is communal with a convivial host introducing guests and the exquisitely prepared food.
The surrounding area offers superb walking and fishing and private guides are available.
This is one of the properties we love most in the whole of Ireland. Its beauty and air of friendly relaxation are unmatched elsewhere and although we were wary at first of the communal dining concept, we found it to be excellent.

Rooms
Each of the 13 rooms is attractively furnished in a style in keeping with the house’s historic nature. Some have wooden floors while others are carpeted, and any in-room armchairs or sofas tend to match the headboards. The classically tiled bathrooms mostly have a shower over the bath. Many of the rooms have views across the lough (lake) or toward the mountains. None of the doors have locks, and none of the rooms have TVs, although Wi-Fi is available.
Location
Hidden in a remote valley just north of the beautiful Killary Harbour and Connemara National Park, Delphi Lodge is wonderfully situated for those wanting to hike or fish. Not to be confused with the nearby Delphi Resort, the lodge can be found at the head of Fin Lough. The lodge is about an hour and a half by car from Galway and half an hour from Kylemore Abbey.
Food and drink
In keeping with Delphi Lodge’s ‘country house’ feel, there is no restaurant at the property. Instead there is a dining room where guests are seated together at a long table and served a delicious set three-course menu, which showcases produce from the local area. Michael, the manager of Delphi Lodge, often acts as host introducing guests and each of the different, exquisitely prepared courses. Canapes and cocktails are served in the lounge beforehand, where guests retire after dinner for coffee and chocolates.Â
Facilities and activities
There are a number of superb hikes in the local area, and if you would like to venture further afield staff can organize a hiking guide to accompany you. Delphi is renowned for its salmon fishing and guests can have a day or half day’s fishing or fly casting tuition with a ghillie (guide) in the local loughs (lakes) and river.
