Built across two main buildings, the calm and tranquil surroundings of the Hotel by the Red Canal seem almost at odds with the hustle and bustle of Mandalay’s busy streets.
With attractive gardens, a small pristine swimming pool and an extensive bar and restaurant area, the property is extremely well equipped for a relaxing stay in this busy city.
A perennial favorite of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼, the Hotel by the Red Canal is an extremely welcoming and exceptionally well-run locally-owned property. In a city with a real dearth of quality boutique accommodation, this property stands well above the rest to provide a really charming and pleasant hotel at which to base yourselves for Mandalay.

Rooms
There are four different room categories, all interestingly named after the four major states of Myanmar — Kachin, Shan, Chin and Rakhine. All rooms are tastefully designed, with traditional ethnic artifacts and textiles a hallmark of each room. The Chin and Shan rooms face internally within the hotel, giving a great view from their balconies to the small waterfall and stream that flows through the resort. At just under 24 sq m, the rooms are compact, but do offer twin or double bed configurations and private en suite facilities. The Kachin and Rakhine rooms are at the rear of the hotel, the Kachin rooms offering an outdoor shower facility. The Rakhine rooms are the largest at nearly 30 sq m, and come complete with a traditional Rakhine souvenir gift.
Location
Nestled among residential buildings on a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of the town center, it is just a short drive to the famous Mandalay Palace or other attractions.
Food and drink
The Spice Garden restaurant on site offers an extensive menu with a fusion of Indian and Burmese cuisine, with food freshly prepared as standard. While there are alternative restaurants within walking distance, the Spice Garden alongside the adjacent Canopy Bar make for an excellent setting to spend the evening.
Families
While not directly marketing itself as a family hotel, there is absolutely no reason not to use this hotel as a base for a family — with the attractive gardens and swimming pool there is space aplenty for a family to relax.
Honeymooners
Owing to the extremely high levels of service and care for their guests, the Hotel by the Red Canal would make for a perfect setting at which to celebrate a honeymoon or an anniversary.
Facilities and activities
The small Prana Spa offers a wide range of treatments and packages to suit everyone. There is also a good size gym with a wide range of equipment on offer, and “e-hub” the business center for checking emails and simple browsing. While the attractive pool is not one to do laps in, it does provide a wonderful little oasis for cooling off after a day visiting the ancient capitals or touring the city.
Alternative places to stay nearby
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favorite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can't be bettered.
