Inkaterra Machu Picchu

Inkaterra Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, Peru

Inkaterra is a stylish and comfortable hotel, providing a relaxing retreat where you can enjoy the wildlife-filled natural surroundings.

Accommodation is in beautifully appointed, spacious casitas, suites and villas which are scattered around the property's pretty gardens. The hotel has a rustic feel, with cozy rooms decorated in neutral colors, and beautiful views over the Urubamba River.

Great for birdwatching, you may be lucky enough to see a hummingbird among other colorful birdlife.

OUR OPINION:

The Inkaterra certainly has the best position in the village of Aguas Calientes, offering a comfortable place to feel at one with nature. We do find that the service can be mixed, and being located in dense cloudforest, natural light in rooms is also at a minimum. Despite this, the hotel is a peaceful escape, and with its beautiful grounds and walking trails it does offer an extra dimension to your time in the area.

Rooms

Accommodation is spread through the cloudforest, accessed along stone pathways. Each room comes with alpaca blankets, fireplaces (except Superior casitas), comfortable seating areas and large en suite bathrooms. Casitas are divided into Superior, Superior Deluxe and Junior Suite categories, with the first two having either a queen size bed or two doubles and the latter housing a king size bed along with additional features such as iPod speakers, a separate living area and, in some cases, a terrace.

Machu Picchu Suites offer further space and luxury, featuring their own terrace, plunge pool and wood burning fireplace, along with either one or two king size beds or two double beds. Complimentary Wi-Fi, satellite TV and an open-air shower are also included, with the Suite Inkaterra also featuring a private garden. This can also be joined with another suite to form the Villa Inkaterra, which is ideal for families, boasting private terraces, plunge pools and a butler service.

Location

Located above the Urubamba River, Inkaterra is a little further from the center of Aguas Calientes than other hotels, and therefore is further away from the main bus stop up to Machu Picchu. However, being a 20-minute walk away from the town means that the hotel is quieter and enjoys a tranquil setting.

Food and drink

A buffet breakfast is usually served from 5am onward, allowing guests to have a head-start if planning to visit the ruins. There are two restaurants, the main one serving lunch and dinner, which has beautiful views over the river. The hotel also serves afternoon tea — the perfect way to recharge the batteries after a morning visiting the ruins.

Facilities and activities

The hotel does have an outdoor pool, although temperatures in Aguas Calientes rarely reach a point where you would want to swim. A choice of nature walks are also offered, taking guests through the extensive grounds or even further afield into the cloudforest. Some of these walks are complimentary while others have an additional cost. On site, there's also an Andean sauna, a spa and a gift shop. Binoculars can be rented and packed lunches can be prepared for an additional charge.
