For those seeking to disappear into the spiritual heart of Tunis, one need look no further than the Dar El Medina. Nestled in the very heart of the Medina, this Dar is the first of its kind in the capital. Refurbished from an old house, the twelve rooms have all been given popular Arabic girls' names. Simplicity, but comfortable is the central principle, and it is by adhering to tradition that this maison de charme has truly succeeded. Rather unassuming from the outside, once inside Dar El Medina you find a small but airy courtyard with bougainvilleas climbing the walls, a quiet breakfast room and two staircases leading to the rooms. On the roof there is a charming open area, where you can have a glass of mint tea and enjoy views over the medina. There are restaurants nearby which have also been converted from old houses, where you can sample typical Tunisian cuisine.

Carthage City Tour
One of the best ways to begin a visit to Carthage is to take a view of it from on high. The Byrsa Hill looks out over the whole city and the vista extends to the mountains of the Cap Bon beyond the Gulf of Tunis.

While some might argue that Tunisia does not possess a stunning draw, such as the Pyramids of Giza, or the ancient city of Petra, there is little doubt that Dougga is the pinnacle of the Roman presence in Tunisia, and looks out majestically over the hills.
