The Gilpin Hotel & Lake House consists of two luxurious family-run boutique hotels. Both balance warmth and friendliness with professional service and charming decor.
The main Gilpin Hotel consists of an original 1901 Georgian country house. Extensively refurbished, the building combines its welcoming, country feel with chic decor, making this boutique hotel look and feel like a glamorous home.
The nearby secluded Gilpin Lake House is a six-suite sanctuary with large, beautiful grounds, a private lake, and a spa with a hot tub, pool and sauna.
In addition to the guest rooms, the Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is well known for its Michelin-starred restaurant and creative dishes that are available in several unique dining rooms.
We love the Gilpin for its stylish and comfortable lounges and its beautiful garden space.

Rooms
The Gilpin Hotel consists of 14 guest rooms, six garden suites and five private and modern spa lodges, each with their own steam rooms and saunas. All rooms are characterful with attractive views and many rooms have their own private hot tubs. The rooms are equipped with TVs, DVD players, minibars, tea and coffee facilities and homemade biscuits. They also feature comforts such as bathrobes, 24-hour room service and free Wi-Fi. For an even more intimate stay there is the exclusive Lake House sanctuary where the lodges include a private en suite spa complete with a steam room, sauna and hot tub.
Location
Surrounded by beautiful, landscaped gardens with its own private lake and walking trails, the Gilpin Hotel & Lake House feels peaceful and secluded, but local attractions are only moments away. The shores of Lake Windermere are a short, ten-minute drive from the hotel, with the small but lively town of Ambleside only 20 minutes away by car.
Food and drink
The on-site HRiSHi restaurant focuses on traditional British cuisine with a modern-Asian twist. The varied menu consists of seasonal dishes made from local produce. Although there is only one restaurant, the hotel has three dining rooms. To accompany your meal there is a wide range of soft drinks, liqueurs, beers and an extensive wine list.
Families
Children aged seven years and older are welcome, however the hotel doesn’t offer any specific facilities for children.
Facilities and activities
The spa offers a range of treatment options for guests staying at both hotels. Lake House guests also have exclusive access to the spa’s hot tub, pool, sauna and Jetty Spa Trail. Guests at the Gilpin Hotel receive free entrance to The Old England Hotel Spa on Lake Windermere, where they can enjoy the pool, steam room, sauna, ice room and gym.
Accessibility
None of the guest rooms can be reached by an elevator, but one of the ground-level garden suites is fully accessible, including the outdoor hot tub.
Alternative places to stay nearby
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favorite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can't be bettered.
