Lone Mountain Ranch

Montana, The US

Lone Mountain Ranch sits on 150 acres of big sky wilderness, in the heart of the American Rockies. A stay here is all about getting off the grid and reconnecting with nature through an array of activities — all without compromising on comfort.

The ranch has a small, intimate feel with just 25 log cabins, all perfectly spread out, but well-placed within walking distance of the ranch's main lodge and Horn & Cantle Restaurant. Each cabin has plush beds, log-burning fireplaces and its own outdoor seating area for soaking up the sunshine. There are complimentary bottles of wine, cookies and Montana-grown teas in each cabin. Guests can also enjoy luxurious toiletries, underfloor heating and multiple windows to enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery.

Dining in the Horn & Cantle Restaurant is a highlight of anyone's stay. The ranch's culinary team create daily-changing buffet spreads and the à la carte menu has excellent choices to suit all preferences. The food here is exceptional, and with three meals a day included in your stay, you can dine well.

Activities at the ranch change with the seasons. Summer at the ranch offers lush meadows in abundance, best explored on horseback or mountain bike. Hundreds of lakes surround the ranch, and these can be enjoyed on canoes, paddleboards or lakeside hikes. During the winter months, the ranch is the perfect place to be if you enjoy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. With thousands of acres of cross-country trails, guests are well-placed to enjoy the wilderness in a winter wonderland setting.

OUR OPINION:

The food at the ranch is enough reason to visit. Make sure to sample the pastry chef's skillet cookie and s'mores chocolate mousse before you leave.

Rooms

Cabins at Lone Mountain Ranch are either one or two bedrooms, but many adjoin to make for a great family-friendly option. As well as some cabins adjoining, some are also quite near others, so while they remain relatively private, you are never far away from someone else.

The log-burning stoves are a cozy addition, and housekeeping can light it for you at your request.

Location

Nestled at the base of the Madison Range in Big Sky country, the ranch is just 50 minutes from Bozeman-Yellowstone Airport, a 10-minute shuttle ride into the town of Big Sky, and one hour from the West Yellowstone entrance.

Food and drink

Dining at Lone Mountain Ranch is very much an occasion. Sourcing local ingredients and producing exquisite farm-to-table dishes that reflect the heritage of the state is of utmost importance to the chef. Guests can expect high-end American fare, fine wines and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The dining room is kitted out with cowboy portraits and landscape artwork of the surrounding Rockies as well as a roaring fire and high beamed ceilings. Next door, the Saloon bar often hosts live music and is the perfect spot for a pre- or post-dinner cocktail.

In the summer months, guests can enjoy cookouts, and in winter, a magical moonlit sleigh ride to the North Fork Cabin — a secluded cabin nestled among the forest where you can enjoy a three-course meal family-style with live music.
