Dominated by an 11th-century tower, the tiny village of Barbaresco is surrounded by vineyards and acknowledged for the quality of its wines. Enotecas (wine shops) and restaurants line the narrow winding streets. Wine lovers flock here to sip the full-bodied red, which the village gave its name to, on a terrace overlooking the very vineyards where the grapes ripen.

Wandering the medieval streets and soaking up the views is one of the best ways to spend your time here. But, stay overnight and you might well see the morning fog (nebbia) after which the native nebbiolo grape was named. Beyond, hilltop villages poke through the mist in this UNESCO-protected landscape of historic vineyards and farms.

The Barbaresco wine region encompasses three villages, one of which is Barbaresco, and it was this unassuming little spot that gave the renowned wine its name. The village is a little less worldly than nearby Barolo and although it lacks its museums and castle, it has a more authentic and rustic appeal.

The main sight is the village’s sturdy red-brick tower. Originally a watchtower defending the town from the Saracens, it was once part of a much larger fortification. Now thoroughly restored and fitted with a viewing platform, it offers you a slice of local history as well as panoramic views of the Langhe hills, the nearby Roero wine region and the Alps. You access the tower by a glass elevator and steel walkway, which takes you to the internal levels. They hold a wine cellar and tasting room, as well as an exhibition on the town and its wine history.

The surrounding countryside is defined by its vineyards, and the quiet roads and gentle hills make it ideal for hiking or cycling. Nearby, you can visit the village of Barolo, also known for the quality of its wines, and the regional capital, Alba, which is Piedmont’s gastronomic hub.
