Famous for its incredible street food, no trip to Palermo would be complete without a visit to one of the city’s vibrant and bustling markets piled high with fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. Along with fresh produce, the markets are filled with the tempting aromas of street food, and the kiosks with their hot griddles and vats of boiling oil have long been a feature of the city’s landscape. The stalls have traditionally provided cheap but filling food to the town's workers and with your guide you’ll be able to delve right in like a local, experiencing a wonderful array of sights, sounds, smells and tastes.
Beginning near the Teatro Massimo in central Palermo in the morning, when the markets are at their liveliest, you'll head off on foot to the bustling Capo street market. After passing through Porta Carini, you'll find yourself in winding streets flanked by vendors showcasing their wares. This is arguably one of the city’s most atmospheric markets with a plethora of fresh ingredients on offer along with a huge range of snacks and street food.
As part of the tour you’ll be able to sample a range of traditional foods — often cooked right in front of you — while your guide explains their various origins and historical significance. Try snacks such as panelle (chickpea fritters) and crocchè (potato croquettes with parsley or mint), fried fish, arancini (rice balls) and sfincione (Sicilian style pizza).
If you're feeling brave, you can also try some regional specialities such as pani ca' meusa (spleen sandwich) or stigghiola (offal kebabs) which are much loved by locals.
After leaving the market you’ll continue through the backstreets to reach the Quattro Canti, Palermo’s iconic crossroads in the historical heart of the city. Here your guide will give you a short introduction to the surrounding buildings before ending the tour with a stop to enjoy a coffee or traditional Sicilian granita.
