La Sultana Marrakesh

La Sultana Marrakesh

Marrakesh, Morocco

La Sultana captures the charm of luxury riads from a bygone era. Understated from the outside with its lantern-lit walkway and red-brick walls, once you enter, you're met with sheer opulence thanks to its spacious, intricately decorated interiors, including tiled pillars, glistening chandeliers and carved stone. The property combines five riads into one, giving you plenty of space in which to unwind as a break from the busy city streets.

The 28 rooms and suites offer space and privacy while still feeling part of the wider property. Decorated in individual styles, they're each furnished with antiques and paintings, while soundproofing means you won't be disturbed. Lush palms gather around the outdoor heated pool, and there's a spa complete with two hammams, a sauna and a Jacuzzi. You can also spend time on the spacious, sun-soaked roof terrace, which gives you 360-degree views over the city, the nearby Saadian Tombs and the distant Atlas Mountains. Experience a spa treatment, or simply lounge in the sun.

While Marrakesh has plenty of places to dine, you could choose to eat in at La Table de la Sultana, which serves French- and Moroccan-inspired cuisine. Lunch is served at La Table du Souk, on the rooftop, with both a street food menu and market menu to choose from. Come evening, the rooftop's home to The Odette Rooftop Bar and Mezze, serving small plates and cocktails.

OUR OPINION:

We love the attention to detail in this riad's decor, its sense of space and its excellent facilities. Make sure to spend time on the rooftop sipping a cocktail or just drinking in the views.

Rooms

The 28 rooms and suites span five different categories, which vary in size and amenities. Each is uniquely decorated with curated selections of Moroccan handicrafts and artwork, and comes with its own en suite bathroom. Soundproofing adds to your privacy and means you won't be disturbed by other guests, while air-conditioning is a welcome addition after spending the day in the Moroccan sun.

Location

La Sultana is located in the Imperial Quarter of the Marrakesh medina, an area long inhabited by the sultans and home to many of the renowned monuments of Marrakesh. The entrance to the quarter is Bab Agnaou, one of the most beautiful gates to the city, which was built in the 12th century. From the roof of La Sultana, you can see the ruins of the El Badi Palace as well as the Saadian Tombs. You're within walking distance of most sights in Marrakesh, including the extensive marketplaces and the Djemaa el Fna square.

Food and drink

La Sultana has two restaurants and a rooftop bar. La Table de la Sultana, open every day for dinner, presents a fusion of Moroccan and French cuisine, and uses Moroccan ingredients that are ethically and organically sourced. La Table du Souk, located on the roof level, offers signature modern cuisine inspired by fresh ingredients and the traditions of Moroccan street food. You'll find dishes such as vegetarian couscous and grilled fish, as well as more adventurous options like babbouche — snails served in an aromatic broth, commonly served at Moroccan street stalls. The rooftop bar serves refreshing cocktails and small plates each evening from 5pm.

Facilities and activities

As well as the rooftop area, which is a highlight in itself thanks to the views you have, La Sultana offers an outdoor pool and a spa, including two hammams, a sauna, a Jacuzzi and massage cabins. Cooking classes are also held on the roof each morning.

Accessibility

This beautiful riad is one of the few in Marrakesh that has a lift from the ground floor all the way up to the roof terrace.
