Franschhoek Country House & Villas

Franschhoek Country House & Villas

Franschhoek, South Africa

A former perfumery, this original 1890 manor house has been carefully renovated using Provençal influences. A peaceful retreat with its own spa, Franschhoek Country House and Villas has beautiful grounds: beds of lavender, bowers covered in flowers, fountains and two swimming pools.

There are over 20 rooms, cottages and villas, some in the main manor house building and some dotted throughout the hotel’s immaculately landscaped gardens. All rooms either overlook courtyards or the gardens, and some also have mountain views.

The Monneaux Restaurant offers on-site fine dining and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

OUR OPINION:

Although this is one of Franschhoek’s larger hotels, it still retains a boutique-like ambience. With its superb restaurant and lovely pool area, we think it makes for a relaxing and luxurious Winelands bolthole.

Rooms

There are four room categories: Standard, Luxury, Garden Cottages and Villa Suites. Standard rooms are located within the manor house, while Luxury rooms are separate and more spacious. Both have en suite bathrooms, private balconies or patios, and seating areas. Garden Cottages have two storeys and are suitable for guests with small children as there is room for fold-out beds. Villa Suites are the grandest rooms, with larger private balconies. All rooms are decorated in Provençal style and feature complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, and air-conditioning. Luxury rooms and Villa Suites contain either a wood or electric fireplace.

Location

The property is situated one kilometre from the centre of Franschhoek, a few minutes’ drive off the main road as you head toward Paarl. There are excellent wineries and restaurants to explore nearby. If you wish to head into Franschhoek proper, the hotel offers a free shuttle service between 8am and 11pm, with a small charge outside of these hours.

Breakfast is usually included depending on room type. The property’s elegant Monneaux Restaurant is rated among the top restaurants in South Africa. It offers fine wines and à la carte dining. A tasting menu with optional wine matching is available and lunch is served on a shady outdoor terrace. Alternatively, there is a good choice of gourmet restaurants in central Franschhoek.
