Formerly the New Oriental Hotel, the oldest hotel in Sri Lanka, Amangalla is now under the renowned management of Aman Resorts. Many original features such as the wooden floors and beds have been carefully restored to preserve the colonial atmosphere. Entry to the hotel is from the street through the veranda to the lounge and dining area.
In the evenings, a pianist entertains on a grand piano. For a quieter experience, head to the library which has a collection of photos of the family who owned the New Oriental. The pool and gardens lie at the back of the hotel, away from the bustle of the fort. The innovative pool design is typical of Aman properties. Along one side are several gazebo allowing relaxation in the shade.
There are four room categories to choose from. All are spacious and decorated in a very traditional manner but have minibars, air conditioning and a safe. Freestanding baths are a highlight but modern showers are also available. The higher room categories have separate sitting rooms where you can enjoy a gin and tonic mixed at your minibar!
