The capital of Turkey and its second largest city, Ankara is actually a much lesser-known destination than many other cities in the country.
Despite its long history the city first came into prominence in 1919 when Atatürk decided to make Angora, as Ankara was known until the 1930s, his base following his victory in Turkey's War of Independence. Since then it has been developed as the country’s economic and political centre.
Although it is not the most captivating of Turkey’s cities, it is nevertheless interesting to see the financial success of the country reflected here in the modern architecture and thriving population.
Ankara's main attractions are within or surrounding the Citadel, a labyrinth of winding streets enclosed by and spilling out of the castle walls. Close to here is the excellent Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, one of Turkey's best museums, displaying artefacts from almost all of the main archaeological sites in the country, dating from as far back as Neolithic times.
