El Calafate is the gateway to the Los Glaciares National Park and the mighty Perito Moreno and Upsala glaciers.
The town has grown rapidly over the last decade, with new hotels springing up monthly and it makes a pleasant enough base from which to get out and visit the glaciers. The main street, Avenida del Libertador General San Martin is lined with shops and restaurants and can be expensive but for hungry visitors, the choice is welcome.
