Oddballs Camp

Gunn's Concession, Botswana

Oddballs Camp is located deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta, overlooking Chief's Island and the Boro River. There’s a laid-back, rustic feel to the property’s main area, which is made entirely of wood and bamboo and adorned with African artwork and ornaments. Outside is an elevated viewing platform where you can enjoy a refreshing drink while gazing over the vast sweep of the Delta as the sun sets over the water.

The camp’s 15 canvas tents either face the water or are set back among the trees. While simple in style, they provide a true safari experience, and even have traditional bucket showers in their outdoor but private en suite bathrooms. You also have your own shaded deck where you can sit and watch the local birdlife, and some of the tents cater to families.

Many of the staff and guides at Oddballs are from the local villages and are incredibly welcoming, as well as being knowledgeable about the area’s wildlife. During your stay, they’ll take you out on guided bush walks as well as mokoro (traditional canoe) trips during the dry season (April to October), when there’s more water on the ground.

OUR OPINION:

This is a simple, no-frills camp, but we find that the excellent guiding, laid-back atmosphere and secluded location makes it a great value option for staying in the heart of the Okavango Delta.

Rooms

The camp’s 15 canvas tents each boast an outdoor en suite bathroom with flush toilet and an alfresco bucket shower that you fill yourself. Inside, you’ll find two comfortable single beds or one double bed. You also have your own private raised deck, which is shaded by cloth to create a peaceful place to relax and watch the local birdlife after a day exploring.

Location

Situated in the Delta’s private Gunn’s Concession, the camp overlooks the Boro River and is close to Chief's Island — one of the largest islands in the Okavango. This area is home to some of the largest populations of wildlife in the Delta, including lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, and a variety of plains game, from zebra to red lechwe. Next to the camp, there’s an airstrip shared with sister property, Oddballs Enclave.

Food and drink

Meals are served in the main dining and lounge area, where guests sit around a long communal table lit by lanterns in the evening. The food is hearty and fresh, and there’s an honesty bar that’s open all day and evening.

Families

The camp welcomes children of all ages and offers two family tents, which each have two tents that share a bathroom.

Facilities and activities

During your stay here, you’ll head out on guided bush walks to explore Chief’s Island, home to plains game and a wealth of birdlife. You’ll also spend time traversing the mysterious lily and reed waterways of the Delta in a mokoro, and there may be the opportunity to visit your guide's village, where you can learn more about life in the Delta. Back at camp, relax on your deck or on the elevated viewing platform, looking out for passing wildlife.
