A wonderful way to the wildlife in Botswana is on foot, varying from a gentle morning walk to two or three-day hikes.

Walking safaris were pioneered in Africa in the 1960s, and they're still the best way of getting really up close and personal to nature. You also get a completely different perspective when on foot, seeing many of the smaller things that you can't easily pick out from a vehicle.

As part of a small group, you're escorted by guides and scouts, and you explore areas with no roads. On a typical morning walk you might track elephant, listen to birds, or have a picnic above a lagoon full of hippo.

Seeing the Big Five on a walking safari

Botswana is particularly good for walking safaris due to its richness of game. In fact you can see all the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) with a little luck.

The country also boasts plenty of unique landscapes and habitats, from the wetlands of the Okavango Delta to the huge expanses of white salt of the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Stay close to the wildlife in a mobile camp

If you want to continue the theme of seeing nature at its rawest then Botswana also offers plenty of mobile camping safari options. Our specialists will be happy to advise you further, creating a tailor-made itinerary that is ideally suited to your requirements.
