Caño Negro is a wildlife refuge in the north of Costa Rica's Alajuela province.

Iguana, Caño Negro, Costa RicaThe low-lying wetlands and flooded forest centered around Lake Caño Negro and the channels of the Rio Frio make up an extensive reserve which is a renowned refuge for the nesting of migratory birds. The reserve is also home to a fascinating variety of mammals such as tapir, the capuchin, spider and howler species of monkey, caiman and reptiles.

In the drier season when the waters recede there is an astonishing concentration of migratory waterfowl such as storks, ibis, anhinga and cormorant which make the reserve their temporary home.
