Rooms
Blending traditional style with modern amenities, the villas are a highlight of a stay here. Each is spacious and features a modern, open-roofed en suite bathroom and a good range of amenities.
There are several categories to choose from, including Luxury Pavilion rooms set in lush foliage, and Meandering Pool Villas, which have direct access to the pool from their private sit-outs. Some of these are duplex, with the bedroom overlooking the pool. There are also Heritage and Heritage Lake View Villas, both of which have private plunge pools and Jacuzzis in their own courtyards, with the latter offering panoramic views over the lake. For further space and luxury, the Presidential Suites have wonderful views over the lake and private pools, Jacuzzis and courtyards.
Location
The resort is located in the Keralan village of Kumarakom, right on the scenic backwaters, surrounded by paddy fields and mangrove forests.
Food and drink
The resort’s main multi-cuisine restaurant, Ettukettu, is housed in an eight-sided mansion with two central courtyards, which was dismantled in its original location and relocated to the resort. It serves continental, Chinese, Mughali, North Indian and traditional Kerala dishes. There’s also Vembanad, a seafood restaurant set on the banks of the backwaters, and Thattukada, a traditional tea shop.
Facilities and activities
The hotel has an infinity swimming pool with Jacuzzi on the banks of the lake, plus a second serpentine pool, which a number of villas have direct access to. Ayurvedic treatments are offered at the spa, and there’s a fitness center.
Activities offered by the hotel include houseboat or speedboat rides, a visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, rowing and fishing. In the evening, cultural performances such as Kathakali are often staged, and complimentary one hour sunset cruises are offered.
