Barolo village

Barolo village and winery tour

Your driver picks you up from your hotel on the morning of the tour and takes you directly to the small village of Barolo to meet your private guide. Barolo is an understandably popular spot, but your guide will steer you away from any crowds and take you through the winding streets to panoramic viewpoints where you can admire the local landscape, including the vineyards and fields of hazelnut bushes.

You’ll meander along the main street, which is lined with wine shops, and head up to the village’s medieval castle, which dates back to the 11th century. As you enter the castle, your guide will explain the history of its past owners, the Falletti family, who were responsible for introducing Barolo wine to the world.

The castle hosts the Barolo Wine Museum, a modern, interactive exhibit dedicated to the history of wine. After visiting the museum, you’ll descend into the old wine cellars, now home to the Regional Enoteca of Barolo (enoteca means wine shop). Here, you can see a sample of wines produced in the area, visit the shop to buy bottles of Barolo wines or have a tasting. Each day, three local wines are on offer with an aim to showcase the differences and complexity of their character.

After your visit to the castle, you have some free time for lunch, at a restaurant of your choice, before leaving your guide and continuing with your driver to a local family-run winery.

The drive to Vajra is scenic, with seemingly endless vineyards lining the road and, on a clear day, views of the Alps in the distance. At the winery, you’ll have a short guided tour and hear about its history and production methods, before enjoying a guided wine tasting while taking in the views. Once you’ve had some time to relax, your driver will take you back to your hotel.
